Well… time for another review, and this time out it’s for the recent 2013 US adaption of the romantic fantasy novel “Beautiful Creatures”. What? An English language film? Yep… my sweet Carolyn got to pick one for a change, and this tale of witches, curses, and romance was her way of trying to find that illusive movie that would please both our movie watchin’ styles. Awwww!! She’s such a sweetheart… 😉
Quick synopsis? Gotcha covered… 😉 “In Gatlin, South Carolina, Ethan Wate longs to escape his boring life in his small sleepy Southern town. He meets a mysterious new girl, Lena. Together, they uncover dark secrets about their respective families, their history and their town while falling into a forbidden romance.”
So can this one successfully combine the two genres of both tender romantic fiction and supernatural drama? Will both me and my sweetie like it? Oooohh!! Most importantly… will it just plain be any darn good? Just one way for you to find out o’ Gentle Visitor, and that’s to “Read On”…. 😉
Yep…. your Favorite Catgirl’s actually been to the cinema for “Movie Nite” this time out, and the film? Why, the fantasy fairy tale action horror mash-up, “Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters” of course…. 😉
Our Synopsis? How this then: “All the world knows the story of innocent brother and sister, Hansel & Gretel and their nearly tragic woodland excursion to a wicked witch’s candy cottage deep in the woods one dark and spooky night. But… what happened to them after that? Why, they grew up of course… and traded in their carefree youth to become the world’s most hardened deadly professional Witch Hunters in all the land. Now… wherever evil lurks, whenever children are at risk, there will be a fearless avenging duo of deadly killers to put things right and see that all wicked witches get their just deserts!”
After the recent fairytale cinema “re-imaginings”, like “The Brothers Grimm”, “Little Red Riding Hood” and “Snow White & The Huntsman” it seems everybody wants to do their own retake on a favorite old story, and what could be more perfect than a story about child eating old Hags and the leather clad siblings who hunt them? Think this crazy Catgirl would ever want to miss that sort of silly goofy movie fun? Nawwww….
But the real question is, of course, what did yours truly think of all the medieval butt-kicking action as our frisky brother & sister open up that family sized can of whup-ass on all the evil witches they can get their hands on? Guess you’ll wanna “Read On” and find out…. 😉
Another big ol’ delivery of DVD’s has reached your Favorite Catgirl’s mailbox and so it’s back to India this time for another wacky Hindi horror offering, 2010’s “Kaalo” aka “Kaalo the Witch”.
Our synopsis reads: “Kaalo tells the story of a deadly witch returning from beyond the grave who attacks a bus in the deserts of Rajasthan and hunts down a little girl. Based on a folktale, the story of Kaalo revolves around a desert dwelling witch by the same name who lived in Kulbhata during the 18th century. She was stoned to death and buried by angry villagers for sacrificing young nubile girls to satisfy her greed for immortality. But, somehow, her evil spirit lived on.
A century later villagers spoke of Kaalo’s sightings yet again. They claimed she was even more angry and dangerous than before and that she was back to finish what she had left incomplete. Kulbhata village was vacated overnight by the frightened locals. All roads leading to Kulbhata were sealed by horrifying folkstories of Kaalo killing anyone who dared to enter Kulbhata until a bus carrying eleven passengers on its way to Kuldevi had to pass through the cursed place. One of the passengers on the bus was a twelve-year-old girl named Shona who was traveling alone to spend her vacation at her grandmother’s house in the neighboring village. Shona was clever, witty and cheerful. She soon became the life of the journey. Everyone loved her endearing manners. Especially the reclusive and reticent Sameer, who was traveling with a bag loaded with gun powder to blast a well for his drought plagued village. Unfortunately for them all, raised from her grave accidentally by foolish quarrymen, Kaalo awoke…. thirsty for blood. Shona’s blood…… “
Now that definitely sounds promising…. Evil child eating cannibal witch with big ol’ halberd chases people around the deserts of India. Why wouldn’t Neko want to watch this one? It certainly looks like it might be a whole lot of goofy monster movie fun!! Neko likes monsters…. especially freaky cannibal monsters…. and it’s about time for me to get a heapin’ dose of flesh munchin’ fun, Hindi style. So naturally I’m all over this one.
Think maybe you too could give “Kaalo” a try? Then by all means… “Read On” and find out for sure….
