Whew… February is soooo nearly gone, but the snow lingers on here at the ol’ Litterbox. March rapidly approaches and in an attempt to shake of the seasonal doldrums that have me in their evil clutches I thought I might try to do another Themed Movie Review Marathon this upcoming month. How to choose? Well that was easy…. 😉
As usual it was my very sensible and very together wife and sweetheart who accidentally sparked my mind and solved my problem. Of late my wee brain has been all goofy and nostalgic and all my thoughts are slipping back to fond memories of lil’ Miyuki’s adventures in blissfully warm Summers past. I’ve already wrote about my memories of “Banana Republic” here at the Litterbox, and as always that ended up being a silly lil’ chat between us one chilly evening as we settled in for bedtime. (What? You mean none of you carry on intimate lil’ conversations with your significant other about your childhood dreams of being a jungle explorer? 😉 )
Telling her that reminded me of that Summer… the one where I wore that silly khaki explorer getup of mine just about forever (at least whenever my Mom would let me, that is…)… and… as it happens… that was also the year “Raiders of the Lost Ark” first came out…. Oh yeah. THAT movie…. 😉
Then Carolyn reminded me… it’s been 34 years since that movie came out. 34 YEARS!! Gosh, how this wee Catgirl sometimes forgets just how long ago my childhood really was… So, anyways…. my idea is to revist that wonderous movie with a Nekolishous “Lil’ Kitten Classics” Review of “Raiders” at 34 years along… followed throughout the month with oodles of other cinema “classics” errr… ummmm… “insprired” by it’s legacy. Some fairly good ones… some really bad ones, a couple of foreign ones…. and maybe even a few “surprises” along the way. (Possibly even a Triple Feature “shared review” with blogging friends, if they are up for the fun… 😉 )
Yep, o’ Gentle Visitors. So that means it’s time to grab your bush hat, trusty leather jacket, pack your rucksack with survival goodies, and sharpen your machete! This March, “Adventure awaits!!” Cue that theme music!!
It’s a Sunday afternoon, the frigid weather has see-sawed back to crazy warm and turned all our snow to sloppy slush today… But, not to worry… I’m all warm, dry, and cozy at home. And… lucky me… with no distractions… I got all my management duties and paperwork completely finished for the upcoming week, and that means I’ve the whole evening off from work! Carolyn has been gone all day with some of her friends from the college on a quick impulsive shopping excursion to the city, so it’s just lil’ ol’ me and Ting-ting here at the apartment right now. With some precious “me time” for a change, I thought I’d kick back… let my thoughts drift a bit… and catch all my Gentle Visitors up on the life of your Favorite Catgirl Princess once more. Yep… that’s right. It’s Diary Time! 😀
Psst! This way for more!
Brrrrr!!! The weather hereabouts is simply atrocious these last few weeks! Thank goodness your Favorite Catgirl can still escape the frigid miserable cold with a warm and cuddly evening on the couch snuggled under a wooly blankie with my dearest Carolyn and my kitty and enjoy some chills of a whole different sort. This time out? How about another virtual trip “South of the Border” with a look at the recently released Mexican remake of director Carlos Enrique Taboada’s 1975 horror classic “Más Negro Que La Noche” aka “Darker Than The Night”.
Our synopsis? “Greta is a beautiful young woman whose eccentric aunt Ofelia passes away leaving her a large, once opulent mansion. When Greta moves in with her friends she discovers that as a stipulation of the will, she must take care of her aunt’s prized black cat, Beker. The new residents take charge of the mansion, throwing wild parties and enjoying a fun-filled summer until they lose track of Beker – who drowns in the mansion’s pool. What was about to be the best summer of their lives quickly turns into a spine-chilling fight for their lives as eerie events from the past return to haunt them and it seems none of them is safe from Ofelia’s ghostly wrath.”
Old haunted mansion… creepy black cat… vengeful spirits from beyond the grave… Oh yes… Definitely sounds like a pretty close remake of the original, which your Favorite Catgirl watched some time back, but will this one be as creepy and neat as the original classic? Only one way to find out, o’ Gentle Visitors… 🙂
Psst! This way for more!
Whooo-hoo!! Finally an afternoon off, and time for a way overdue Review. This time it’s off to the Philippines for a look at the 2012 Star Cinema release by director Chito S. Roño, “The Healing”. I’ve had this one lurking around in my “to watch” pile for a year or so… but for one reason or another, it just never seemed to make its way into the ol’ DVD player. Well… that was awfully lazy of me, but thankfully I’ve remedied that lil’ oversight. 😉
The synopsis goes like this : “Seth witnesses a miracle when her paralyzed father is healed by Manang Elsa, a rural faith healer in the Provinces. Her neighbors, many of whom suffer from various maladies, plead with her to bring them to Elsa for the same treatment that cured her father. Jed, Seth’s perturbed son, asks his mother for help for his half-sister Cookie, her ex-husband’s daughter from his new marriage, and desperately pleads to join them as well. Reluctantly, Seth agrees, and all goes well at first, but soon after strange things begin to happen… leading to horror and death for all those involved. Feeling ultimately responsible for it all, Seth desperately seeks a way to end the curse before more tragedy can occur. But will she act quickly enough to stop the curse before it claims yet another life?”
Hmmm?? From the Trailer, this one looked to be a fusion of Catholic Faith Healing traditions with local Philippine witchcraft and ghost folklore. Don’t know exactly why I’ve waited so long to give it a watch, as it seems right up a certain crazy Catgirl’s alley. But hey… I’ve fixed that now, so if you wonder if it might also be a movie you need to hunt down, let’s get right to it and find out if it’s worth a look-see for any of you Gentle Visitors. 🙂
Psst! This way for more!
Sorry for the lack of Reviews of late, but things ’round here have been both busy and annoying these last few weeks. Top of this wee lady’s “shit list”? Winter. Sheeeesh!! Honestly!! Enough already with the cold… the snow… the sleet… the slush… the dreary gray skies. Yep. Pretty much all of it. 😦
At least we live in a nice apartment, so there is a very nice couple of guys taking care of the shoveling, the salting of the sidewalks and dealing with most of the crappy outside work that would be ours and ours alone if we lived in our very own cozy lil’ house.
As all of you know… this wee Catgirl is soooo not a “winter girl”. Nope. Give me the warm breezes and sunny days of Summer over this any day. And yet… I’m told we have another crazy storm barreling its way towards us like some drunken Viking raider preparing to drop another foot of the evil white stuff on top of our heads. Sigh….
Anyways… your Favorite Catgirl just wanted to post something… anything…. to let all my Gentle Visitors know I’m still very much alive (if not terribly ambitious or motivated) and not frozen to the ground somewheres in the Northern wastelands. Hopefully I’ll be able to free up a bit more time in the next couple of days to get creative and do a proper Review post soon and get back to normal. Hope, hope! 🙂
