Mmmmmm…. don’t you just love waking up on a day off from work? Warm and cozy under a blanket, cuddled up with the one you love, slowly coming awake and stretching and wiggling your toes with delicious pleasure as your fuzzy lil’ brain suddenly realizes…. “Ooohh!!! I don’t have to haul my butt outta bed right now if I don’t wanna!!” Priceless….
And yours truly got to experience that wonderful feelin’ this morning. Just in time to also realize that 2013 is now officially gone, replaced with yet another new fresh year waiting to unfold it’s endless possibilities.
Naturally… with that wonderful realization… and the knowledge that Carolyn also had the day off (Actually this whole darn week… the lucky lil’ vixen!) I could enjoy staying right where I was for as long as possible.
But, having finally sated my need for quality lazy snuggle time, with breakfast all sorted out, and nothing but time on my hands for the rest of the day, it seemed fitting to take time to do a quick post to update all my Gentle Visitors while Carolyn sneaks off to the store to snag us a few things. (Yeah, yeah… right. With my birthday coming up in a couple days I know exactly why she wanted me to “hang out and relax” rather than accompanying her… 😉 )
Anyway… I’ll speculate about that, but first you all know it’s time to “Read On” if you too want in on my thoughts… 🙂
I know it’s been a week since Christmas, but then you all know how taking a few days away from work can be. You never return to find things flowing along without you. There’s always that big pile of stuff that needs doing and so I’ve been sorting that all out along with the rest of the season’s festive aftermath. Just in time for New Years’ and my birthday to come chugging on in…. Sigh. This lady seems destined to corner the market on “busy”….
So… how was Christmas you ask? Why, wonderful as always. 🙂
If nothing else, between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year my mood has been greatly improved and doubly boosted by all the time we’ve spent with Carolyn’s sister and the family. It’s always a time filled with relaxation and the growing connection I’m feeling every time we are together. We only grow closer the more time we spend with them. It’s nice to be a part of it all. This year, Carolyn and I extended that feeling to the last member of our own lil’ family group, our kitty Ting-Ting.
Usually on the few occasions when we go away for a few days Ting-Ting has to stay behind at the apartment and Sam ordinarily drops by to feed and care for her while we are gone, but Sam wasn’t able to do that this time out deciding she needed a bit of time with her own family this Holiday. So… suitably equipped with her own lil’ pet carrier, a selection of yummy kitty nibbles, her favorite catnip mouse, and a travel sized litterbox she joined us on our annual trip this year. We checked ahead of time with Sandra of course, but she was more than happy to extend the annual holiday invitation to our lil’ furball.
Mind you… we were a bit worried how Ting-Ting would handle it all. She’s not used to riding in the car… unless she’s headed to the vet for a check-up or something. But that’s usually a short 20 minute ride… not the hour and a half she needed to put up with for this trip. As usual, she absolutely hated being in the carrier, meowing pitifully until we could take it no more and let her out to roam around the car. Luckily… she was fairly happy perching right on my lap for most of the trip being suitably petted and worshiped in the manner she prefers till we arrived at Sandra’s.
I think she found the whole thing a bit intimidating at first. That… and she was definitely not pleased to find we weren’t back home when the ride ended. A strange house… filled with strange people and strange smells… nope, not a happy kitty at first. Not at all. We set up her lil’ carrier and litterbox in the corner of the guest room along with our things and she promptly hid in the carrier for most of the afternoon that first day. Given how much she normally hates being in that thing, it spoke volumes about her general mood.
The weather had been cold but clear following the big ice storm of the weekend before and our trip down was an easy one. We had hoped the worst of that was over, but down at Sandra’s they had gotten hit even harder than we had been in that same storm, so it shouldn’t have surprised us to get a second wintery wallop on Christmas Eve that knocked out power and left us all in the dark that night. Like most folk in our part of the country, that wasn’t as big a deal as it might sound. Sandra had stockpiled candles and electric lanterns for just such an occasion, and the house has a big ol’ fireplace in the living room which more than kept things all toasty and warm while we all hung out for the evening in front of a crackling fire. Drawn by the heat… and my patented “Magical Catgirl Powers” (Which mostly consisted of me shaking a foil pouch of seafood nuggets in that way Ting-Ting knows means “kitty yummy time”…. 😉 ) she abandoned the bedroom and joined us by the fire. Once there she eventually calmed down and decided that this strange new “apartment” wasn’t too bad after all. She was still pretty darn wary of all the new people she found hanging out with us, but eventually (with the help of those seafood nuggets…) she even let Maddy coax her into being petted for a while. That was nice… and with some tips about just the sort of handling Ting-Ting enjoys, they got along pretty well. I even taught her the “secret noise”…
Secret noise? Yep. One thing I’ve always instinctively known since I was a wee Catgirl… and nobody ever taught it to me… is this lil’ sound, a half meow, half chirp that cats respond to. It gets their attention and usually has them coming right over to you to see just what’s up. Don’t know why or how I came up with it… I’ve just always been able to use it since I was a little girl trying to charm the local stray cats that lived around the neighborhood back then. Seriously. Carolyn has never mastered it, although I’ve tried to teach her… but whenever she tries it, Ting-Ting just gives her that look… the one that says “Hmmmph!! Human… you aren’t doing it right. Do it better.” That’s one reason Sam sometimes jokes around and calls me “The Cat Whisperer…”. Maddy now. She’s got the gift. One or two tries and she got it down… Ting-Ting immediately approaching her and responding to her overtures. Pretty soon everybody else wanted to try too, but none of them could manage the same trick. It must be one of those things you either have or don’t. Needless to say, it made Maddy feel very pleased and special to be the only one other than me who could do it. Maybe she’s secretly got a Catgirl’s spirit too…. 😉
The power outage lasted all that evening and into the next morning but didn’t ruin things at all. We exchanged gifts over steamy cups of cocoa bright and early before heading out for a family breakfast at a local diner that still had power and was open for business. The line crews had fixed things by the time we got back and we were able to spend the rest of the day watching movies together since the cable company still hadn’t manged to get their service back to normal as well. We got to watch a Hindi horror film, “Horror Story”…. a DVD that had arrived in the mail all the way from India unexpectedly the very day we left, giving me a chance to share it with the kids who are starting to really warm to their crazy Aunt Miyuki’s tastes in film, Hehehe…. ( Trust me… All part of my secret plot for eventual World Domination… 😉 )
We got to meet some of Sandra and Allan’s friends this year too, going out to dinner with them the next evening for some “adult time” while Maddy and Adam were off doing some stuff with their friends. Not a bad time at all, and not at all awkward or weird either. Both couples who joined us didn’t seem fazed at all to have us along together as a “couple” in our own right. I know…. I know…. after all these years together it shouldn’t seem weird to me anymore, but I’m still always somewhat timid and apprehensive around meeting new people until I’m sure they wont freak out about Carolyn and I being together in a romantically lesbian relationship. Mind you… even though we are both “out” now, we still aren’t super excessive with our displays of affection in public, because you still never know how strangers will react. Old habits… old worries and fears… harder to let go than you might imagine.
But… no worries and no problems. We had a great dinner and some nice conversation and it was a wonderful last evening with Sandra and her husband before we left for home again with promises to return soon when we got some time.
So now with New Years behind us, my next milestone will be my birthday coming up at the end of the week. Carolyn is being super cagey about it all, but she’s already got something cooking, there’s just no hiding it. Just what it’ll be I don’t know yet, but I’m thinking it’s going to be big and silly, and romantic, as Sandra seemed awfully excited during our visit, her reactions telling me she’s already privy to the details. Sisters…. they share everything… and I mean everything… so I know for certain Carolyn told her all about what she’s up to. I tried tricking Sandra into telling me something about it… but none of my subtle tricks could wheedle it out of her. So I guess I’ll just have to wait to find out. And, yes…. the suspense is killing me… 😉
Like as not I’ll post all about that this weekend once the “big surprise” happens, but hopefully before then, I’ll get another Review up for that Hindi Horror film we saw, “Horror Story”. So.. until then I suppose that’s all for now and until then get your New Years resolutions ready Gentle Visitors and “Meow, meow for now!!”
