Well… Christmas has come and gone as December quickly fades away taking 2011 right along with it. Soon a brand spankin’ new year will be here to replace it, but before then, your Favorite Catgirl has actually managed to sneak aside a couple more days off to relax and bask in the glow of all the things that have made the Holidays special for her.
Oh, yes… and that also means it’s “Diary Time” again for all my regular Gentle Visitors so you can catch up on the life of this lil’ Catgirl…. So… sit back, get comfy, pour yourself a steamy cup of cocoa, and make yourselves at home. Oh…. and of course, by all means “Read On”…. 😉
Christmas has come and gone and yours truly has already Decked the Halls and jingled my bells to celebrate, so now it’s time to let you in on what’s new in your Favorite Catgirl’s DVD player this Holiday season. This time.. a look at the 2011 Thai horror film “Ladda Land” just out on Region 3 HK DVD with those ever so handy English subtitles on board for my viewing (and comprehending) pleasure.
Our synopsis? Well… that goes sorta like this: “Jumping at the chance for a higher-paying job, Thee (Saharat “Kong” Sangkapreecha) moves to Chiang Mai in northern Thailand with his wife (Piyathida “Pock” Woramuksik) and two kids, and finally gets that dream home he’s been striving to attain after 14 long years of trying in vain to afford. The happy family of four move into a new housing estate called Ladda Land, and all is well until a neighbor’s young Burmese maid is found brutally murdered and her body stuffed in a refrigerator. But all is not harmonious with the family and then even more eerie and strange things begin to happen at Ladda Land… “
As with most Thai films the last couple of years or so, this one was somewhat of a vexing lil’ effort to track down. Others have beaten me to it, review wise…. one good example being our friend elpeevio at his own film Blog, “Things Fall Apart”. (You can check out his review HERE…) But I’m nothing if not tenacious in my efforts to find my cinema goodies…. so it wasn’t long before I got on it’s trail too. Released sans subtitles in Thailand itself, the very first legitimate English subbed DVD to surface, in Malaysia was… errr… disappointing… to say the least. With subtitles that were obviously auto-translated by computer and never checked by anyone fluent in English it was one of my rare purchase mistakes. I figured I’d be searching for some accurate fansubs to use, when the good folks in Hong Kong came to my rescue and released their own version…. with good accurate subs. Yay!!
Think maybe it’ll be something you’ll want to see? Then you’d probably better “Read On” and see what it’s all about then…. 😉
There’s snow on the ground and a definite chill in the air as we move closer to yet another Christmas and so it’s time to make that chilly weather a bit more tolerable…. with something spicy and yummy from the kitchen to warm Carolyn and I up from the inside out.
This time out… a twist on an old “South-of-the-Border” favorite, “Chili Con Carne”…. but done with a North Indian Punjabi styling known there as “Rajma Chawal” (राजमा), or “Red Bean Curry with Rice”. Mmmmm!! Spicy fruity curry…. how this wee Catgirl loves you!!
Now my sweetie, Carolyn… she likes a good chunky chili… and eating out at a Mexican restaurant is definitely something she always enjoys. However, despite my best efforts, I’ve yet to convince her that partaking of a good spicy curry is as close to heaven as you are likely to ever get at mealtime. That changed forever last week when I remembered this particular dish while rummaging through our cupboard looking for some ingredients for a dinner surprise. On my shelf… hidden behind some cans of corn and green beans was a big lonely #5 can of red kidney beans… sitting right next to a big ol’ can of diced tomatoes. It was a clear and unmistakable omen from the Kitchen Fairies… and Neko would never disregard such a clear mandate from them…. 😉
Wanna know how you, too, can unleash the wondrous power of this familiar and yet sooooo exotic tasting curry for yourself and those special people you love? Why then you are gonna have to “Read On” then aren’t you?
Time for a review of yet another of the “Shaky Cam” horror films that this wee Catgirl can’t seem to escape from lately. This time out, I’m taking a look at Malaysia’s contribution to the genre, 2011’s “Seru”. About time we got one of these from this part of the world…. the basic “low budget” premise seems perfectly suited for them.
Our synopsis… sounding somewhat familiar by now… goes like this: “Seru” follows a production team in the midst of shooting when many strange things start to take place, affecting the crew members until eventually someone is murdered. When assistant director Sari gets hysterical and makeup artist Julia collapses, things start to get haywire. Not long after, Julia disappears into the forest and the rest head out to find her. As the crew members get taken out one at a time by a vengeful entity, the reason behind the whole event is uncovered.”
Hmmmm? Can’t be tooooo darn many more of these lurking out there now can there? Anyway…. the Trailer for this one actually looks pretty darn creepy, so who knows? Maybe it’ll be the Malaysians who knock this wee Catgirl’s socks off with some real scares and prove that a movie doesn’t have to be a big expensive “Blockbuster” to do the job a good horror film is supposed to do.
So… get yourselves ready Gentle Visitors, as we travel into the jungles of the Malay peninsula to see if the Hantu have what it takes to scare us silly…
It’s a chilly winter Monday morning here at the ol’ apartment and Carolyn has already headed out to work leavin’ lazy lil’ me to lounge about the apartment by myself. With the snow and cold that have finally found their way to our neck of the woods, I just can’t bring myself to do much more with my day off than be a sluggish layabout despite the well needed free time that has fallen into my lap.
No amount of steamy coffee can seem to rouse me today… and as I sit here at the keyboard I’m still wearing my flannel PJ’s and fuzzy slippers even though it’s getting fairly late in the morning for such an guilty indulgence. Even Ting-ting seems to feel the lethargy that grips me, and right this moment she’s snoozing on the back of the couch rather than tearing about the apartment chasing the invisible gremlins that have bedeviled her for the last month or so ever since the heating kicked on with the resultant pings and gurgles of the pipes in the baseboard elements.
Still… as I lounge about my cozy apartment this morning, it strikes me that it’s been far too long since I invited all my Gentle Visitors to take a peek inside my Diary and share the boring details of this Catgirl’s life of late. However… even as lazy as I am today, that’s easily remedied if you just want to “Read On”….
Another new week…. and another new Review is upon us… Oooohhh… and it seems the dreaded “Curse of the Shaky Cam Horror Movies” is sticking with this wee Catgirl like evil dryer lint to my favorite sweater as we are off to India this time out for their latest addition to the recent deluge of such efforts to hit DVD release, “Ragini MMS”.
Our synopsis reads: “Ragini (Kainaz Motivala) and her boyfriend, Uday (Raj Kumar Yadav) plan a naughty weekend rendezvous to have sex for the first time at a friends desolate bungalow in the midst of a forest outside Mumbai. Of course, Uday also has some other devious plans of his own: the entire house has been rigged with cameras so he can make an amateur sex tape of his tryst with Ragini and sell it off to kick start an “acting career”.
However that turns out to be the very least of their problems as things do not go as planned, and the cameras that were meant to capture tender illicit love-making become witness to something that is beyond the realm of human understanding… something metaphysical… and they find themselves trapped under the spell of an angry vile spirit who plans to keep them in this house forever, turning their “sexcapade” into a living nightmare.”
Hmmmm? Am I ready to see a “shaky cam horror”, Bollywood style? If anything…. it’ll certainly put a different spin on the idea once it takes a trip through the ol’ “cultural filter” to become something for the mainstream Hindi movie audience to enjoy. Both explicit sex and gore aren’t really all that prevalent in Indian film so I figure this ought to be pretty tame by the standards of movies your Favorite Catgirl usually watches, but who knows? Maybe the Indians will pull out all the stops and go crazy with this one….
Wanna know all about it? Well just tiptoe along with me and we’ll take a lil’ peek together then… 😉
It’s finally December… and even though I’ve been a wee bit scarce around the ol’ Litterbox lately, I am still alive and kicking… just busy, busy, busy with the Thanksgiving holiday and, as always, work. But… I have also managed a film or two in my busy schedule, so it’s time for another quick review. (Before somebody discovers I’ve actually got some unaccounted for “free time”…. Hehehehe!!) This time out…. Singapore’s recent addition to the virtual deluge of “shaky cam” horror “fake-cumentaries”, “Haunted Changi” recently released here in the US on Region 1 DVD.
Our synopsis goes along these lines: “In January of 2010, a group of local filmmakers began exploring the famously haunted Old Changi Hospital in Singapore with terrifying and tragic results. This movie pieces together the original Haunted Changi film crew’s footage in an attempt to tell the full story of the terrible events they experienced.”
Hmmmm? Yep. Sounds familiar alright…. but hey, who knows? Given the current popular fascination with this particular horror sub-genre throughout the world, it seems your Favorite Catgirl is going to be sitting through lots… and lots… and lots of these until the craze finally winds down as they always inevitably do.
Will Singapore have anything new or novel to add? Or will we get a simple rehash of old ideas yet again? Guess I’ll find out… and so can you, Gentle Visitor, if you just tag along with lil’ ol’ me and “Read On”….
