It’s back to frosty Norway… home of the vikings… those big singing Valkyrie women…. Lutefisk… and Trolls. Big honking, man eating giant Trolls. Yep…. Trolls… roaming all over the place doing whatever it is that Trolls do. Would your Favorite Catgirl Princess ever steer you wrong? Well… only if the latest fantasy film from that chilly Scandinavian locale has lied to me, that is… Hehehehe!! So this time out, I thought we’d take a look at “Troll Hunter” and ask ourselves that very question: “Trolls? Real or not?”
The synopsis? Well that goes like this: “A group of film students set out to make a documentary about a supposed bear poacher, Hans (Otto Jespersen). The students follow Hans through the wilderness of Western Norway to try to interview him, but he simply tells them to go away. They persist, and as they follow him into a forest, they see flashing lights and hear roars from something larger than a bear. Hans comes running back to his vehicle, screaming “Troll!” They all seek refuge in his car, as their own is now turned over with the tires eaten. Afterward, when the students ask if they can join Hans in his hunt and film it, he agrees. The next day, they follow Hans to film a document of his work as he sets out to kill all the trolls that have broken out of their territories, and to find out why they have started to break out now and not earlier.”
I saw the Trailer for this one some time back, and it’s been teasing me ever since… but now my wait is over. Just out on Region 1 DVD with those ever so helpful English subtitles I crave, it’s available from the good folks at Magnet for me to enjoy. I just know it’s probably on your list too… especially if you like the same sort of crazy films I do, so how about we all settle down and let a certain crazy movie addicted Catgirl tell you all about it?
Monday afternoon and Carolyn and I are back home, safe and sound from our weekend camping adventure. But apparently it was very near thing……
Most of Vermont got slammed fairly hard by Hurricane Irene Sunday, and we only missed it by hours, having decided to pass on a miserable day of rain and wind to leave for the warmth and comfort of home well before dawn that morning. It’s probably a good thing too. I don’t think being stranded in the mountains was exactly what Carolyn had in mind for her first woodland experience.
I sort of had the feeling we should make ourselves scarce, once the rain started falling late Saturday night, and this lil’ Catgirl is all about following her instincts….. Luckily it was easy to convince Carolyn she’d probably rather spend the next couple of days lazing about the apartment with lil’ ol’ me than risking a longer stay in Vermont. All in all, we did have two nice days in the woods (and two nice nights cuddling in my cozy sleeping bag….) so I’m still considering it a success.
Want to know just what sort of fun we did manage to squeeze into the two days away? Then you’ll have to follow your instincts and “Read On”…….
Yay!! It’s vacation time! Let the “Happy Kitten Dance of Joy” commence!! 🙂
Starting this Friday, your Favorite Catgirl Princess is taking her first well deserved vacation in years…. a whole week away from the restaurant and all the usual annoying day to day responsibilities that go with it. Instead… at least for the weekend, Carolyn and I are off to the wilds of Vermont for a bit of camping and backpacking, just the way I used to do back in high-school and college.
This means of course, that I’ll be away from the ol’ “Litterbox” till late Monday if all goes well and Hurricane Irene doesn’t make life in the great outdoors too darn miserable that is. We almost changed our minds about going, but ultimately the idea of having some proper quality time together overwhelmed any fears of inclement weather and we decided to go for it despite the chance we’ll get rained out much of the weekend. Sam has promised to take lil’ Ting-ting for the Weekend and give her all the love, care, and attention she needs while her mommies are away….. I just can’t wait!!
Still… given that this is a first time out in the wild for Carolyn…. who despite being the more “sporty” of the two of us… has actually never been camping in her whole life. No kidding. So I’m going to have to take things easy on her….
Wanna know what’s in store for my sweetie and me? Then you’ll want to “Read On”…..
Time for another review and so it’s off to Indonesia for some haunted high school hi-jinx in the Indonesian horror/ comedy “Toilet 105”….. Toilet!? Yes, you read it correctly… your favorite Catgirl actually managed to find herself a movie about a haunted toilet. Gotta admit… we don’t see many of those in this part of the world…. Must be an Asian thing. Hehehehe!!
Synopsis? Yep, I’ve got one… and it goes sorta like this: “Three friends, Okta (Ricky Harun), Ical (Lionil Tikoalu) and Rio (Rizky Putra), who are all students of SMU Bina Persada become infatuated with pretty Marsya (Coralie), a new transfer student to their school from France. Unfortunately, Okta already has a girlfriend, Viola (Navi Rizky) who is jealous of the attention he shows towards Marsya. Along with her fellow cheerleader friends, Viola also likes to bully new students. They soon turn their attentions towards poor Marsya.
Mrs. Endang (Suti Karno), the principal of the school repeatedly reminds the students to accept Marsya as one of the students, assisted by her husband, Mr Wahyu (Indra Birowo), who is a counseling teacher. But trouble always seems to happen anyway.
Marsya’s innocence often lands her in trouble but one thing that bothered her most is the appearance of a female ghost at the school toilet. Does this ghost have any connection with the disappearance of another pretty young student, Adelia, some time ago? What is the real hidden secret?”
I’ve had this one for a while now, but somehow it managed to hide itself away in my big ol’ backlog of DVD’s waiting to get watched. It managed to surface just in time for me to get a giggle remembering just how goofy it sounded when I bought it. Could I pass it up again? Nawwww…. I’m just that sort of silly lady. Plus… I couldn’t wait to see the look on Carolyn’s face when I sprung this one on her…..
Whew!!…. It’s been another Monday off from work… Yours truly all by her lil’ lonesome here at the ol’ apartment catching up on some well needed domestic tasks, both in the “Real World”, as well as here at the ol’ “Litterbox”. You know the drill…. I pick up some stuff…. I run some laundry downstairs to the Laundry Room…. I scoop Ting-ting’s lil’ catbox…. and then I get to take a break with a bit of Internet surfing, listen to a wee smidgen of music, and do just the tiniest bit of editing and re-working of my older posts here at the “Litterbox” to see if we can’t get a few more things all squared away right and proper.
As all my gentle Visitors can see, we’re not quite completely there yet…. my image files are still a bit of a mess… but I’m happy to say at least all of my Categories and Tags for all posts are finally all back where they should be once more…. Yay me!!
This means all my old posts are now “search-able” again… and Google should start indexing them soon, meaning that my site traffic (and probably all the weird spam that goes with it…) will increase. I’m assuming that means I’ll be busy with even more “maid-service” here in the days to come…. but hey… that’s just how Blogging goes, right? With that in mind… (and while I await the completion of my laundry load) I feel I deserve a nice reward…. so it’s time to set aside my feather duster, fold my apron, and make a call for Moroccan take-out to go with the last of my wild berry wine coolers for a relaxing bit of “me time” before Carolyn makes it home from work and we start getting ready for Monday night Dance class.
Not to worry though… I imagine I’ll be able to squeeze in another Review sometime in the next day or so…. but, till then, here’s hoping you also get the chance to kick back, bring some order to your own lives, and spend quality time with your special someone too before Summer fades away…. “Meow, meow, for now!!”
This time… it’s of to India for your Favorite Catgirl in her endless quest to watch every odd foreign horror movie ever released. (At least it seems like that to those who know me best… Hehehe…)
Our synopsis? Well it goes like this: “Set in the misty mountains of Koti, “Haunted 3D” revolves around the sprawling Glen Manor, a mansion with a secret past and a haunted present. The hero, Rehan, visits Glen Manor to complete its sale, which his father had initiated. But once he realizes that certain mysterious occurrences in the manor may jeopardize the sale, he investigates these inexplicable happenings and discovers a secret—only to fall in love with it! What he does not bargain for is that the secret brings him face to face with terror, the like of which he could never conceive.”
As the poster proclaims… this is India’s first foray into the recent 3D movie craze, and the DVD presents the film in this format… coming with no less than 4 pairs of those goofy red/blue paper glasses you need for this sort of thing… Sigh…. Not exactly this lil’ lady’s favorite movie fad, I almost passed on this one, but finding a copy at a really nice price convinced me to take a chance. Want to find out if it’s worth your effort to see?
Then you know the drill by now… “Read On” o’ gentle Visitors!
Time to swing by the sunny Philippines for today’s movie review, and this time out we have a look at Topel Lee’s latest horror offering, 2011’s “Tumbok”. The Trailer promises a haunted apartment building, ghosts, creepy goings on, and a look at a traditional Philippine version of feng shui. Think I could pass it all up? Not on your life.
Our story goes like this: “After they tie the knot, newlyweds Grace (Cristine Reyes) and Ronnie (Carlo Aquino) inherit a run-down condominium unit from the unexpected death of Ronnie’s dad under eerie circumstances. The building stands right at the center of the crossroads of three streets, an unlucky location referred to as “Tumbok”. Such a place is believed by the superstitious to gather negative spiritual energy and bring bad fortune to all who dare to live there. Not long after moving in, Grace begins to sense something strange about the place and those who also live there. More horrible than the inexplicable things she is witnessing, is the abuse she begins to experience nightly in her dreams. Disturbed, terrified and pregnant with child, Grace must somehow try to uncover the secret behind all the dread misfortunes they are experiencing before it is too late and they cannot escape from the place of horror they now call home.”
Yep. That definitely sounds like one of those sorts of movies I like, and both Topel Lee and Cristine Reyes have entertained me before in other Philippine horror efforts, so what are we waiting for? That’s right… it’s time to “Read On” and find out just exactly what the heck “Tumbok” is all about!
So…. just who am I?
It’s another quiet day at the apartment for lil’ ol’ me and time once again to let all my regular visitors here at the Litterbox have another peek into the life of your Favorite Catgirl Princess…. and as is usually the case, the quiet solitude of a day off from work has me plugging away at the seemingly endless task of straightening things up here. My Categories and Tags are about half restored, and with luck I’ll finish them all up by late today or tomorrow.
Still…. it’s boring work and as always I’m easily distracted from it by the thoughts that swirl and creep about in my head when I pause for a moment in my tasks. Those of you who have followed my odd ramblings know just how full of nervous energy I can get and the way some notions and ideas can get all stuck in my head, nagging away at me till I sort them all out.
Naturally… it seems only “right” to sit down… write it all out and let the ideas flow…. so it’s to my “Diary” I turn to try to put it all into perspective. Wanna share my silly thoughts? Then all you have to do, Gentle Visitor, is “Read On”…..
♡ Ahhhhh♡…. that contented happy sound can mean only one thing… it’s finally here!! Yes….. I’m giddy with the knowledge that your Favorite Catgirl Princess can at last sate her intense need for fantasy romance with a look at the 2011 remake of the Chinese classic “A Chinese Ghost Story”. Be still my trembling heart….♡
Synopsis? You mean you don’t already know the touching timeless love story of righteous young scholar Ning Choi-san and the lovely ghostly maiden Nip Siu-sin? Tsk, tsk…. We’ll have to fix that wont we? So alright… here’s our story this time around: “Aspiring to be the top demon hunter in all the land, Yan Chixia (Louis Koo) ventures into the sinister Black Mountain, taking it as his training ground. There, he has slain all kinds of evil spirits and monsters in countless dangerous battles, but when the young exorcist encounters the enchanting fox spirit Siu-sin (Liu Yifei) and falls helplessly in love with her, he can’t get himself to kill her. Later, as our story begins, the village at the bottom of Black Mountain is faced with a serious drought, and the villagers are forced to find a new source of water on the demon-infested mountain. Part of the search team, a good-natured scholar named Ning Cai-chen (Yu Shaoqun) becomes smitten with Siu-sin, who is still being enslaved by the powerful and bloodthirsty Tree Demon (Kara Hui) all these years later …”
Those of you familiar with the classic original will immediately recognize the changes in plot, and to some purists, this will be seen as the ultimate in blasphemy…. to have the nerve to mess with a cherished classic. Still, as someone who’s watched enough of these wonderful romances over the years, it bears reminding people that even Tsui Hark’s version from 1987 was itself a remake of an even earlier telling of this classic tale, 1960’s Shaw Brothers classic “The Enchanting Shadow”. Given that… I’m more inclined to approach this more as a “re-imagining” than a “remake’…. and who knows? Maybe I’ll like it just as much as I do both those earlier films.
Want to find out for yourself? Why then follow this lil’ Catgirl into the deep dark woods of cursed Black Mountain and meet me in the ruins of the Haunted Orchid Temple and I’ll tell you all about it…..
Back to France for some creepy movie goodness this week as I take a look at 2010’s French Horror/ Suspense film “Le Village des Ombres” aka “The Village of Shadows”. Oh yes…. more haunted curses and ghostly goings on for your Favorite Catgirl Princess. Yep…. just love those ghost stories, I do…..
The synopsis for this one goes like follows: “Emma, her sister, and her 7 friends are heading to the village of Ruiflec for a weekend getaway. Unknown to them, Ruiflec is a nearly forgotten village with a dark history. Traveling separately in two cars they soon arrive but then all the passengers of the first vehicle mysteriously disappear without a trace or any explanation at the village entrance. The others soon discover that Ruiflec is totally empty, all means of communication are dead and now…. for them…. there is no way out. Frantically searching for their lost friends, they must now fight an unknown terror to stay alive and get out of Ruiflec before they too begin to disappear, one by one… in the Village of Shadows.”
Now this one sounded promising. I missed the usual promotional Trailers and news on it until just stumbling across the DVD during one of my searches of Euro-horror films at Amazon. One viewing of the Trailer later, and I was pretty much convinced I needed to give it a try. Want to know it it might be something you need to see as well? Then by all means, “Read On” and let a certain goofy movie loving Catgirl Princess tell you all about it!!
