It’s that time of year again…. the 4th of July, when all we here in the good ol’ US get to share a day of cook-outs and parties and the like with friends and family in shared celebration of our country’s birthday. There’s usually good times to be had by all and luckily it’s one of the few Holidays not particularly known for a need to go out for “fine dining”, so even yours truly gets the day off from work to indulge in the fun.
Working at the college, naturally Carolyn was off for the day too, so we both managed to spend the whole time indulging in some nice shared activities together.
No..no… no!! Nothing as scandalous as you might be imagining…. just the sorts of routine little things that we usually can’t have time for and seem to miss given our normally hectic lives.
Hmmmmm? What sort of stuff, you ask? Well don’t just sit there and wonder…. “Read On!!”
Sunday night for me was a busy one. Closing down the restaurant… even for a day… is always such a chore. Mondays are usually my inventory and ordering days, but the Holiday meant that I had to get all that sort of stuff finished by late Sunday if I wanted to have it all squared away for Tuesday’s deliveries. That and work the dinner shift in the Kitchen on top of it all. Not exactly fun. I was one tired lil’ lady by the time Sam dropped me off at the apartment well after 11 that evening. Carolyn took one look at me and sent me off to the shower to clean away the smell of the kitchen and soothe my tired muscles with all the hot steamy water I could stand. Once I was clean, all I had the strength for was to crawl into our warm lil’ bed where I got the nicest back-rub and cozy cuddle that put me to sleep almost immediately.
The next morning… still a little stiff and worn… I awoke to find Carolyn all comfy and warm, snuggled next to me already awake, just lying still and quietly watching me sleep. It was one of those perfect moments of bliss when I asked her how long she’d been awake and she told me she’d been lying there about a half an hour or so, just enjoying the view. Given that I was all disheveled, rumpled, my hair a mess, and definitely not at my best, and it was really touching to hear her tell me she liked watching me sleep. Apparently she does it a lot, or so she tells me…. but I’ve just never caught her at it before. According to her, I’m “so damn pretty and absolutely adorable” when I’m completely relaxed in sleep, and look to her just like I did back in college…. and something she finds incredibly sexy. It was so romantic a notion, that it got her a long lingering kiss from me before we reluctantly climbed out of bed to start the day. Darn…. There are still times when I can’t believe how I never… ever….. saw this side of her all those years we knew each other before….
After a quick breakfast…. and coffee (Mmmmm…. warm sweet coffee. Where o’ where would Neko be without you?)… it was off for a morning walk down to the river and back. The morning was cool and the sun was just starting to warm things up, drying off the remaining moisture from the light rain of the night before. Sitting on a bench by the water, we worked out the day’s plan. First… another couple cups of coffee down at our favorite coffee-shop…. with tasty donuts and danishes… yummy! Then we’d spend the morning cleaning up the apartment…. which was much more fun than it sounds given that we never get to do that together… listening to music and fooling about with Ting-ting till we were ready to go to Carolyn’s Staff Cookout back at the park with the people in her department and their families.
It was something we’d planned ahead on, as Carolyn had gotten an invitation well in advance and none of the people at my restaurant were doing anything special this year together for us to join in on. So…. despite my normal aversion to large parties filled mostly with strangers, it was a given that we’d attend. I brought along some strip steak on skewers marinated in Argentinian Chimichurri to grill up and a light antipasto salad as our contributions to the party (Expect another “Catgirl’s Cozy Kitchen” Recipe post soon, Hehehehe!!) . It was a big hit… and there was a lot of really great food to nibble along with it. There were also plenty of lawn games and dancing and lots of nice relaxed socializing with an eclectic group of people I’m really starting to get comfortable around…. Soooo, sooo nice. We stayed there from just past noon till well into that evening, when the final event of the day was watching the Fireworks display put on by our local village across the river from the park.
The heat of the day went away quickly, and we had to break out blankets from the car to snuggle under while the two of us watched the colorful display unfold. It was a good show, if a short one…. and just the perfect relaxing ending to a perfect day. Sometimes it’s the ordinary little things that end up being the most enjoyable.
Here’s hoping you had a nice day as well o’ Gentle Visitors, even if…. for you… the 4th of July is just another date on the Calendar. Till next time I feel the need to spill the beans on my boring day to day life, “Meow, meow for now….”
And…. to help you feel the frothy pink happiness that is my Life these wonderful days, a lil’ video that sums it all up, “Finally Found” by the British R&B girl group, the Honeyz.
