Another day, another crazy bad Thai Horror/Ghost/Comedy…… Yep, Neko’s been shopping again!! This time out I’ve been watching the Thai Ghost Comedy “Haunting Me”, released with those ever so comforting English Subtitles on DVD in Taiwan. Yep… Taiwan…. lots of new stuff coming out of there lately, and this lil’ girl is eagerly combing the Internet for the cream of the crop of goofy asian goodies! So… what’s this one all about, you ask? Well…
The synopsis I found tells us: “Taew (Jathurong Mokjok), Cartoon, Mot-dum (Ekachai Srivichai) and Songkram are four aging, yet still outrageous, katoeys who run a boarding house for boys in provincial Thailand. After helping to cover up the mysterious deaths of two local teens, obese ladyboy ‘Pancake’ (Koeti Aramboy) and beautiful local girl Num-Ning (Pei Panward), their two spirits begin haunting the dormitory, forcing the “ladies” to try all sorts of crazy schemes to get rid of the ghosts. Eventually, they realize the only way to do this is to help the ghosts to avenge their deaths.”
Hmmmm? Katoeys? What the heck are those, Neko-chan? Well, katoeys are those cross dressing transsexual guys you see in some Thai movies….. So I guess the best way to describe this one is that it’s sorta like if you crossed “Pricilla, Queen of the Desert” with “Ghostbusters”…. but made waaaay cheaper, and put through the ol’ Thai Cultural Filter….. Yep, this is gonna be a strange one….. no doubt about it.
We start out at one of those Thai apartment buildings you’ve seen about a million times before in a Thai film….. but look out!!….. There’s murder afoot!
Seems every time poor Taew, Cartoon, Mot-dum, and Songkramturn turn around, there’s a dead body lying about threatening to scandalize the apartment and threaten it with closure. First local beauty Num-Ning commits suicide by jumping off the roof….. or did she “jump”? Then Pancake slips and falls in the bathroom conking “her” head on the toilet and going to that big “Drag Review in the Sky”. Naturally you can’t involve the police…… that would just be tooooo easy. So they do the next best thing….. bury the poor victims in shallow graves out in the lonely woods under the cover of darkness. Just one problem. They don’t stay buried….Yep. Pretty soon both of those disgruntled spirits are haunting the place but good, driving away all the young men living there and making life miserable for the foursome.
Pretty much exactly what you expect would happen in a film like this does happen…. Naturally the “ladies” have a competitor who is renovating another apartment building and who wants to steal away all of the tenants. Naturally her son and his worthless friends all stay at the apartment building while those renovations go on….. Why I’m not exactly certain, but they do…. and of course they had something to do with poor Num-Ning’s unfortunate “accident/ suicide”…. but more on that later. Meanwhile we get the prerequisite number of homosexual drag queen jokes and even a couple of goat herding Thai Cowboys who wander by doing the whole “Brokeback Mountain” sketch that, while probably funny in Thailand, just left me a confused and a little lost….
Anyway…. eventually the spirit of Num-Ning manages to possess her old boyfriend and clue him in as to how those evil boys tricked her and tried to rape her in their apartment chasing her until she fell to her death. Now her soul is being used by the wicked sorcerer working for the boy’s mother and she’s being forced to haunt the apartment so it will have to close. Pancake and the “ladies” team up and decide to put an end to the sorcerer resulting in a crazy duel out in the woods where the “ladyboys” all dress up in their best Drag Queen fabulousity to do battle. These outfits are sooooo crazy! It’s like these “ladies” are the Lesbian Love children of Wonder Woman and Sailor Moon….. this alone should have paralyzed the sorcerer with laughter…
But I have to say, just when Neko thinks she’s seen it all, there is something to make me go WTF!?!
Pancake…. dressed like some demented Gay Leprechaun rides to battle on a rocket propelled giant penis statue to try to use it’s “mystic power” to overwhelm the sorcerer…. Yep. Didn’t see THAT in “Ghostbusters”….. Neko kids you not.
So. I guess once the chubby transexxual rides the giant penis you’d say it’s time to wrap things up, right? Yep…. The sorcerer gets his just desserts, the “ladies” get to keep the apartment open, the monks show up and bless the place…. it’s a wrap! All in about an hour and a half.
Well….. Neko can say this one was certainly different. The Taiwanese disc by Shengchi is adequate, with forced Trailers, chapters, no other Features and comes in an All Region NTSC letterboxed format (despite being listed as a Region 3 on the label)….. equipped with excellent English and Chinese subtitles. (YAY!!!)
I give it a 3 “Meows” out of 5, for certainly being the most different film I’ve seen in quite some time, but it’s probably waaaaay to weird and out there for most people. Remember…. Neko-chan has told you many times just how truly trashy her tastes can be!! Still…. if you ever need something utterly strange to inflict on friends some Movie Night, “Haunting Me” will certainly do the trick…. (just stock lots of wine coolers and be prepared to apologize the next day…. Hehehehe!!)
I couldn’t find an official Trailer for this one… but Youtube was kind, and this little clip ought to do!
