Well I curled up good and cozy and watched several recent DVD arrivals last night and so naturally it’s review time! We start off with another recent Indonesian Horror film, “Lantai 13”……
The synopsis I founds reads as follows: “Lantai 13 (Thirteenth Floor) is an Indonesian horror movie starring Widi Mulia, member of the singing trio “AB Three”. The story is about a girl named Luna (Widi) who got a job in an office at thirteenth floor. But Luna experiencing a lot of strange things when she works at the office. She often heard someone whisper in her ears, crying in the toilet and smells something weird in the lift. Later she knows those strange things happened because one year ago, 6 June 2006, the owner of the building killed 12 women to become a sacrifice so that his business can grow. He tricked the women to become secretary of his company, but then he killed it. It’s supposed to be 13 women, but one year ago a woman didn’t respond to the invitation letter he sent. The thirteenth woman is Luna. And after one year, Albert, the building owner is still going to complete his sacrificing ceremony.”
Haunted Office Buildings? Hasn’t Neko gone this route before? Will the Indonesians have anything new to say? Lets find out!!
Hmmmm? So what’s the deal on this one? Apparently the number 13 has as much bad mojo in Indonesia as it does here in the good ol’ USA. Naturally there’s a Supernatural fix for that sort of bad luck…. unfortunately it requires the sacrifice of 13 young girls to the forces of evil……. always a big problem. Seems there are a lot of asian films with similar themes….. wish I could say this one found something unique to do with that tired ol’ plot……. but sadly…. nope. Been there….. already been scared by that.
This one is fairly predictable. It’s not a bad film, just not what I had hoped for from other reviews and things I had read on it. Couple the lack of gore, typical in Indonesian films I’ve seen lately, with a somewhat unevenly edited story, and you get a very sad film indeed. The cast is well selected and all do an admirable job in their parts, but the film feels less like a big budget movie and more like a made for TV scare….. Neko found herself wanting more than the thrills and chill on hand here.
The disc itself was a wee bit disappointing too, especially after the classy experience that was “Kuntilanak”. It had selectable english subs, but nowhere near as nice as the ones I have gotten from other Indonesian discs. They were…. well….. clumsy…. and somewhat distracting with many obvious usage errors that made you have to pay extra attention to get the gist of the story. There were a few Trailers, and a “Making of” featurette, but none had subs at all…..
All in all, Neko-chan has to give “Lantai 13” a somewhat cool 3 out of 5 “Meows”…. it was an OK film, and worth my time, but not the scary experience this kitten had hoped for on a cold winter night. Better subs might have helped…. but not enough to even get another “Meow” outta me. Oh well…. better luck next time, Indonesia.
And yes….. there’s a Trailer too, to help you decide if you too must see this one!! Courtesy of our Youtube thingee…enjoy!
