Oooooohh….Halloween is over, but the creepy movies keep showin’ up in my mailbox….so here we go with the “Neko-lishous” take on the latest Korean fright fest to arrive, “Someone Behind You”.
Well the synopsis I find reads as follows:“Ga-in, a smart, pretty girl who is loved by everyone, witnesses the deaths of people around her. She is then singled out as the next in line to die from the curse that has one person in each generation die at the hands of two people close to them. Ga-in searched for the truth about the curse with Suk-min, a boy who always lingers around her, and her boyfriend Heon-joong, but attacks on her life by those dearest to her, like her best friend and her mother, never cease…”
Sounds sorta like a slasher movie…. or maybe a vengeful ghost film…. but wait!!!
It’s both……. No, really!!! (Would this lil’ catgirl kid you?)
Now, of course, you’re going to wanna know more… so “Read On”!!
You see, the story behind this one deals with that basic nasty part of all human beings that dwells in our lowest reptilian brain stem. You know…… that part that, even if just for a moment, might flirt with the notion that somebody making life miserable for us might just need to be dead……. What if an evil spirit was just waiting around to make that a reality?
Yep….. poor Ga-in it turns out, is just the latest member of her family cursed to become the center of attention for such a malign influence. Anytime she seems to offend someone… even over a minor thing, those people inevitably begin to have that thought regarding her. That’s when the nastiness begins…… instead of just “getting over it”, they decide spontaneously to finish poor Ga-in off…. by knife…. by club….. by whatever means is closest to hand. Doesn’t matter who it is…. her school rival, the second best fencer on the fencing team, her best friend, her loving mom, even her boyfriend. This of course means trouble. Biiiiig trouble.
My only complaint with this one is the basic lapse in reality that occurs as the bodies and mayhem surrounding her pile up. The police….for some unknown reason, never even try to question her about these deaths…… no kidding. It’s a gap that made this lil’ catgirl go “Huh”?, but I suppose its a minor quibble….. otherwise the film is entertaining and up to the task of keeping me interested.
All in all, I give this one a 4 “Meows” out of 5, mostly for making an honest attempt to do something new with a tired ol’ slasher idea, but next time I wish they’d involve the authorities a bit more….. just for logic’s sake.
The special 2 disc edition has the following features:
– Feature Film
– Commentary Track 1
– After Commentary
– Making of Film
– Character Images
– Art Design
– Costume Design
– Two People vs Two People
– Comparison between Comic Book and Film
– Deleted Scenes
– Poster Shooting Scenes
– Premier Night Scenes
All in all an excellent presentation as are most Korean discs…. they might be a wee bit pricey but they always are quality editions. Unfortunately as with most, the features aren’t always subtitled like the film.
And naturally, thankies to Youtube for the trailer……
