We’re back to Thailand today for a peek at “Cadaver”, Thailand’s look at they creepyness to be had in the whole world of medical student research….. The original Thai title for the film was “Ajaan Yai”, which is the Thai term for used for cadavers donated for medical school training. It means “the principal” and is meant to be a term of respect for those who donate their bodies for research, but this was seen as too controversial and offensive so it was later changed to “Sope”, which means simply “corpse”. Either way…. it’s a horror movie…. trust this lil’ Catgirl.
Our synopsis for it is:” Mai is a medical student who encounters a scary experience during an experimental cadaver during her anatomy subject. After that, she’s haunted by a woman ghost that keeps following her everywhere. While Mai is frightened of the fearsome ghost, her teacher Prakit is the only hope who can help her. However, when she deeply discovers the truth behind this unknown cadaver, once she realises that it is somehow linked to her own past and a crime that she had committed and then tried to hide, it leads her to find a horrible story of a girl called Dawan who is linked to the cadaver.”
Creepy, huh? Well then, let’s “Read On” shall we?
This one comes to me direct from Singapore, as the Thai disc for this was without subtitles… again…. and for once the Singapore disc disappoints me. It’s presented in a cropped fullscreen version that leaves much to be desired…. I so wish the Thai’s would go back to the way they used to release their films….. (How about if Neko askes reeeeaaal nice?)
Well lets get to the meat of it. The topic itself is ripe for horror….. I mean theres the whole dissection thing… the Buddhist squeamishness regarding the handling of the dead, and a murder mystery to boot. But somehow I found this one a little boring. There’s no gore whatsoever, the standard scares and creepy ghost stuff are there but nothing new occurs that I haven’t seen before.
Natthamonkarn Srinikornchot plays Mai in a convincing and appealing fashion, and the other roles are well done as well, but ultimately I couldn’t buy into the background behind the murder and the crime that sparks the entire event. It just seemed fake and contrived……..
All in all, I have to say this lil’ kitten was disappointed in “Cadaver”, and can only give it 2 “Meows” out of 5…… a fairly low score for what should have been a good lil’ scarefest.
But, of course I leave you with the Trailer to see for yourself…..
